Klaviyo vs Omnisend: Which Email & SMS Platform Should Your Small Shopify Store Actually Buy in 2026?

Both are built for Shopify. Both bill by contact count. One is cheaper at the entry point and bundles more into its free plan; the other has deeper predictive AI. The Verdict

For most small Shopify stores, anywhere from a founder-run brand on 500 contacts to a 5-to-30-person team at 25,000 contacts, Omnisend is the one to buy. It's cheaper at the entry point, it unlocks every feature on the free plan, and its Pro plan still bundles SMS credits for Shopify stores that signed up before May 4, 2026. Buy Klaviyo instead if you're already past $1M in revenue, lean heavily on predictive CLV and churn scoring, or need SMS in the same dashboard as email without a separate credits subscription. The two products are closer than the marketing suggests; the right pick is the one whose pricing curve and SMS model match your store, not the one with the louder brand.

Round by Round

Entry-level price (under 1,000 contacts)Winner: Omnisend

This is the tier most founder-run Shopify stores live in for their first year, and Omnisend is cheaper. (cite index="31-7,31-8">Omnisend's Standard plan starts at $16/month for 500 contacts and bills by contact count</cite>, with (cite index="15-4">6,000 emails included at that tier</cite>. (cite index="27-2">Klaviyo's email plan starts at $20/month for 500 active customer profiles and 5,000 monthly email sends</cite>. Four dollars a month isn't life-changing, but it's 20% at the entry point, and Omnisend also gives you 1,000 more sends. Shopify stores on the free end of the market should also know that (cite index="31-1">Omnisend's free plan is permanent, not a trial, and includes all platform features with a limit of 500 emails/month to up to 250 contacts</cite>, which is a slightly stronger free tier than Klaviyo's.

Scaled price (5,000-50,000 contacts)Winner: Omnisend

This is where the gap gets real. Omnisend's pricing page lets you slide the contact count up through every tier from 500 to 150,000 on the Standard plan, and the per-tier bill scales smoothly with list size. Klaviyo's email plan starts at $20/month at 500 profiles and scales with contact count from there. The practical point for a small store: if your list is going to grow past 10,000 in the next 18 months, run both calculators against your projected contact count before you commit, because the curves diverge as the list grows.

SMS pricing and bundlingWinner: Klaviyo

Klaviyo wins SMS on balance because SMS sits inside the main plan structure rather than as a separate credits subscription. Omnisend's story got messier in May 2026: (cite index="12-7,12-8,12-9">if you subscribe to a paid plan on or after May 4, 2026, SMS is available only as an add-on on the Pro plan with volume-based pricing as low as $0.007/SMS and no included credits, and Free and Standard plans can no longer send SMS</cite>. The per-message rate on Omnisend Pro is cheaper at volume, but you have to be on Pro ($59/month minimum) and buy credits separately. On Klaviyo, SMS is handled as a mobile-messages add-on on the same email plan, which for a small store sending modest SMS is simpler to budget.

Shopify integration depthWinner: Omnisend

This one's close enough that reasonable people disagree, but Omnisend wins on breadth of pre-built ecommerce automations relative to price. <cite index="18-1">Omnisend is purpose-built for Shopify with abandoned cart, browse abandonment, SMS automation, and 24/7 live chat on all plans including free</cite>. Klaviyo has an equally deep Shopify integration, with the Klaviyo app installing directly in your Shopify store so order, customer, and browse events flow in natively. For an owner-operator setting up their first welcome and cart series on a Sunday night, Omnisend's "all features on the free plan" posture is the more forgiving starting point.

Predictive AI and segmentation depthWinner: Klaviyo

This is the round Klaviyo earns on substance, not price. Klaviyo's Email plan includes predictive analytics, AI-generated segments, content, and images, with deeper predictive tooling, including CLV prediction and customer behavior funnels, available through the Klaviyo Personalization add-on. Omnisend has caught up on AI features (segment builders, product recommenders, flow-aware content), but Klaviyo's predictive layer is still the deeper one, and the gap matters once you have enough order history to feed it (usually a few thousand repeat buyers). If you're already past $1M in revenue and your merchandising is driven by cohort behavior, Klaviyo earns its premium here.

Pricing transparency and billing surprisesWinner: Omnisend

Both platforms bill by active profiles rather than subscribers, which is the single biggest source of surprise bills in ecommerce email, so neither is innocent. But Omnisend's add-ons are more predictable. Omnisend's SMS Credits Subscription uses volume-based pricing as low as $0.007/SMS, and (cite index="13-4">any unused Legacy Pro credits carry over and remain available until 60 days after their original issue date</cite>. (cite index="13-25,13-26">Omnisend doesn't lock you into a long-term contract, and plans are billed cycle to cycle based on contact count. You can pay month to month, or pay three months upfront to save 30% off the standard rate</cite>. Klaviyo's billing is also month-to-month, but it has no equivalent published prepayment discount. The three-month-upfront 30% discount is a real lever on Omnisend that Klaviyo doesn't match.

Who should buy which

Pick Omnisend if you’re a founder-run or small-team Shopify store under 10,000 contacts, you want all the ecommerce automations unlocked from day one, and you want pricing that stays rational as the list grows. For most small DTC brands, this is the default answer. The $16-a-month entry point is kinder to a bootstrapped budget than $20, and the pre-May-2026 Pro plan still bundles SMS credits for anyone who signed up before then.

Pick Klaviyo if you’re already running a mature store ($1M-plus in revenue, a few years of order history, and a merchandising process that leans on cohorts) and you want the deeper predictive layer. Pick it also if SMS is central to your mix and you’d rather handle it as a mobile-messages add-on on your email plan than as a separate credits subscription. Klaviyo is more expensive, but at the top of the small-business band the predictive-CLV and churn modeling can pay for the gap in a quarter.

The pricing shape, in plain numbers

The thing to understand about both products is that your bill is driven by the active-profile count on your Shopify store, not by how many emails you send. That number includes people who are getting automated messages (like abandoned-cart emails) even if they never subscribed to a list, which is why both bills grow faster than owners expect.

For a store under 500 contacts on email only, Omnisend Standard is $16/month with 6,000 emails included and Klaviyo Email is $20/month with 5,000 sends included. From there, both vendors publish a sliding scale on their pricing pages that goes up tier by tier with your contact count. Before you commit, plug your current and 18-month-projected contact count into each vendor’s calculator; the two curves don’t move at the same rate, and the difference compounds as your list grows.

A word on the SMS change

Omnisend quietly rewrote its SMS pricing in May 2026, and it’s the one wrinkle a small store should know about before signing up this week. If you subscribe to a paid plan today, SMS is only available on Pro ($59/month minimum), is purchased as a separate volume-based add-on, and comes with no bundled credits. The per-message rate is competitive, as low as $0.007/SMS at high volume, but you lose the old “SMS credits equal to your plan cost” bundle that older Omnisend reviews still describe. Legacy Pro customers who signed up before May 4, 2026 keep that bundle until October 26, 2026, when all Legacy Pro accounts migrate automatically to the current Pro.

Klaviyo’s SMS model is simpler for a small store: mobile messages are an add-on on the email plan, priced by volume and destination, with credits bundled into the subscription rather than purchased separately. For a Shopify store sending a few thousand SMS a month, that’s the easier bill to forecast.

The short version

For most small Shopify stores in 2026: Omnisend. Cheaper at the entry point, full feature set on the free plan, and the Shopify integration is as deep as Klaviyo’s for the kind of flows a small store actually runs: abandoned cart, welcome series, post-purchase cross-sell, browse abandonment, back-in-stock alerts, and branded shipping updates.

For stores already past $1M, with SMS at the center of the mix or a merchandising process that lives on predictive CLV: Klaviyo. You pay more and you get more AI in return. Just know what you’re buying before you commit. The published $20 starting price is a long way from what you’ll pay once your list is well into five figures, and that curve is the single most important number in this decision.
