We compared the AI tools a small-business owner can actually use to run their own Google Ads: what each one costs, what it'll and won't touch, and which one belongs in your account this week.

Opteo
by Opteo Ltd (London)
Editor's Choice
8.8/10★★★★☆
The cleanest suggestion-and-apply workflow in the category for a small business that runs Google Ads and wants a paid copilot without hiring a specialist.
Best for: Owner-operators with $2K–$25K/month in Google spend
Why We Like It
- Continuous monitoring surfaces prioritized 'Improvements' you can push to Google Ads in a couple of seconds
- White-label reports, Slack alerts, and a change log that shows edits under the email attached to your MCC
- Refunds the most recent invoice if you're dissatisfied, and a two-month discount on annual billing
Watch Out For
- Google Ads only, no Meta, TikTok, Microsoft, or LinkedIn support
- Every recommendation still needs a human to click 'apply,' so a busy owner has to actually check the queue

Google Ads (AI Max + Ask Advisor)
by Google
Best Value
8.4/10★★★★☆
The AI layer that's already inside your account, free, and the one Google has been pushing hardest through the Recommendations tab all year.
Best for: Any small business already spending in Google Ads
Why We Like It
- AI Max for Search expands keyword coverage and adapts creative to each query, with a one-click 50/50 experiment so you can validate lift before full activation
- Ask Advisor, the Gemini-powered agentic assistant, will analyze performance, troubleshoot policy issues, and suggest new text and creatives on request
- Free, it's included in every Google Ads account and you're already paying for the media
Watch Out For
- Google's AI has no incentive to reduce your spend on Google's own inventory

WordStream (Google Ads Performance Grader)
by WordStream by LocaliQ
Best for Beginners
8.0/10★★★★☆
The free instant account audit every small-business owner should run before they touch a paid tool. Nine areas, no credit card, real API data.
Best for: First-time audits and gut-checks before you buy anything
Why We Like It
- Free, instant report card scoring your Google Ads account across nine key performance areas with tips to improve each
- Pulls straight from the Google Ads API via standard read-only OAuth you can revoke from your Google account at any time
- Paired with a free Keyword Tool and PPC University, so a beginner can learn what the report is telling them
Watch Out For
- The Grader is a one-shot report, not a management tool: it tells you what's wrong, not how to fix it inside your account
- Running it puts you into a LocaliQ sales funnel, expect follow-up emails and calls about their managed services

Adzooma
by Adzooma
SMBs and freelancers running Google, Microsoft, and Meta side by side
7.6/10★★★⯪☆
The multi-platform pick for a small business whose spend has crept out of Google and onto Microsoft and Meta and doesn't want a third dashboard.
Best for: SMBs and freelancers running Google, Microsoft, and Meta side by side
Why We Like It
- A genuine free plan with unlimited ad account connections, budget tracking, and a monthly PPC report, no time limit
- Manages Google, Microsoft, and Meta from a single dashboard with automation rules and one-click optimizations
- Flat pricing that doesn't scale with your ad spend, plus phone, chat, and knowledge-base support
Watch Out For
- Every change is still recommendation-based; the tool won't act autonomously on your behalf
- Depth on Meta and Microsoft is thinner than depth on Google, and paid tiers move into GBP and require checking on the current pricing page

Optmyzr
by Optmyzr
Small teams that already have a PPC specialist in-house
7.2/10★★★⯪☆
The deepest toolkit on this list, a rule engine, PPC Investigator, and cross-platform coverage, but priced and designed for a PPC specialist, not an owner-operator.
Best for: Small teams that already have a PPC specialist in-house
Why We Like It
- Supports Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, Amazon Ads, Meta Ads, LinkedIn Ads, and Yahoo! Japan Ads, with Amazon and social tools included in every plan
- The Rule Engine, PMax optimizations, Campaign Automator, and Optmyzr Sidekick AI Assistant handle a level of automation nothing else here matches
- Free trial available with monthly or annual billing options
Watch Out For
- Priced on connected ad spend, which pushes real monthly cost well above a solo owner's budget

What changed this year
Two shifts matter for small businesses. First, Google itself moved harder into the AI-copilot territory that third-party tools used to own.
A year into AI Max, Google is expanding it to Shopping campaigns and travel-specific ad formats, launching an AI Brief tool to guide ad messaging and audience targeting, and adding text disclaimers on Final URL expansion so regulated advertisers stay compliant.
On top of that,
Ask Advisor is now an agentic conversational experience built with Gemini in Google Ads that you can use to maximize performance against your goals, get personalized answers, understand and improve campaign performance, troubleshoot performance or ads policy issues, and suggest new text and creatives.
A lot of what a paid copilot did in 2023 is now baked into the platform for free.
Second, the “recommend-only” workflow is showing its age for time-strapped owners. Every third-party tool on this list, Opteo and Adzooma included, still hands you a queue of suggestions to click through. That’s helpful when you have twenty minutes on a Tuesday, less helpful when you don’t. Fully autonomous options exist, but they’re outside the scope of this ranking because none of them are a clear enough win for a first-time small-business buyer to recommend as the safe default.
Who each one is for
If you spend less than $2,000 a month on Google Ads and you’re doing it yourself, you almost certainly don’t need to pay for a third-party tool this quarter. Run WordStream’s Grader for a snapshot, act on Google’s own Recommendations tab (with the one-click AI Max experiment turned on), and see whether the account improves.
If you spend $2,000 to $25,000 a month and Google Search is your primary channel, Opteo is our paid pick. It’s Google Ads only, and it’ll still expect you to review its suggestion queue, but the workflow is the cleanest in the category and the pricing is honest for this size of business. If you’d rather not have a specialist tool for Google and a separate one for Meta, Adzooma’s free tier is the fastest way to see all three platforms in one place before you decide.
If you already have a PPC specialist on staff, which is more common than owners realize once headcount hits ten to twenty, Optmyzr is a legitimate step up in capability. It’s not designed for you if you’re the owner running everything yourself, and its spend-tiered pricing catches up with you fast, but the depth is real.
A note on the rest of your stack
Paid Google Ads is one channel, and a small business rarely wins on one channel alone. Sources and receipts
The claims about Opteo’s pricing, refund policy, and Google-only coverage trace to
Opteo’s own pricing page, which states the company will refund your most recent invoice if you’re dissatisfied and offers a two-month discount on accounts billed yearly
, and
Opteo’s pricing verified at $129/month (Basic) up to $499/month (Agency), with Enterprise pricing custom
. Opteo’s own homepage confirms the workflow:
Opteo continuously monitors Google Ads accounts for statistically significant patterns, and when something comes up, Opteo suggests an improvement that can be pushed live to your Google Ads account in a few seconds.
For Google’s own AI:
Google AI powers Performance Max across bidding, budget optimization, audiences, creatives, attribution, and more, informed by your specific advertising objective, your creative assets, audience signals, and optional data feeds you provide.
The one-click experiment path is documented in Google’s own advertiser help.
Google’s own data shows advertisers that activate AI Max in Search campaigns typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA/ROAS, with an uplift closer to 27% for campaigns still mostly using exact and phrase keywords.
For WordStream:
WordStream’s Google Ads Performance Grader gives you a free, instant report card scoring your account across nine key areas with tips on how to improve.
The tool sits inside
WordStream by LocaliQ, which serves businesses as part of the USA TODAY NETWORK and offers tailored digital marketing solutions distinguished by proprietary technology and insights from working with 300K+ businesses
. Adzooma’s small-business fit is documented on
Adzooma’s own site, which explains the platform simplifies management of paid advertising across Google, Microsoft, and Facebook Ads with AI-powered insights to save time, reduce ad-spend waste, and improve overall campaign performance
. And Optmyzr’s platform reach is stated on
Optmyzr’s pricing page, which lists support for Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, Amazon Ads, Meta Ads, LinkedIn Ads, and Yahoo! Japan Ads, with Amazon and social tools (for Meta and LinkedIn) included in all plans
.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the best AI Google Ads tool for a small business in 2026?
For most owner-operators, the answer is a stack, not a single product. Start free: turn on Google's own AI Max for Search inside your Google Ads account and run WordStream's free Google Ads Performance Grader to see where you're wasting money. If you want a paid copilot to sit on your account and hand you a prioritized to-do list every week, Opteo at $129/month for a single Google Ads account is our top pick. Only move to Optmyzr if you've hired a PPC specialist who wants a rule engine to work in.
How much does Opteo cost?
Opteo's own pricing page lists paid plans from $129/month for the Basic tier up to the Agency tier, with Enterprise pricing custom on request. Opteo also offers a two-month discount on annual billing and will refund your most recent invoice if you're dissatisfied. Confirm the current numbers on opteo.com/pricing before you subscribe.
Is Google's built-in AI enough for a small business, or do I need a third-party tool?
For very small budgets, Google's built-in AI (Smart Bidding, Performance Max, AI Max for Search, and the newer Ask Advisor assistant) is often enough to start with, and it costs nothing on top of your media. The catch is that Google's AI is optimizing toward Google's inventory and gives limited search-term visibility, so a lot of owners eventually add an independent layer (like Opteo or Adzooma) to catch waste that Google won't flag on its own.
Does Opteo work with Meta or Facebook ads?
No. Opteo is Google Ads only. If your spend has spread onto Meta, Microsoft, or TikTok, either add a second tool for those platforms or look at Adzooma, which manages Google, Microsoft, and Meta from a single dashboard.
Is WordStream's free Google Ads Grader actually safe to use?
Yes. The Grader connects via standard read-only OAuth that you can revoke from your Google account settings at any time, and the numbers in the report come straight from the Google Ads API. The honest caveat is that running it puts your email into WordStream (now WordStream by LocaliQ, part of Gannett) as a sales lead for their managed services, so expect follow-up. That's a fair trade for a free nine-area account audit; it's not a fair trade if you don't want the calls.
